Vibe: Cox Brewing Company is a hidden gem (literally, it’s pretty hidden) but is definitely worth seeking out. Everything about it is laid back and easy going, which makes it the perfect spot to visit on a weekend afternoon.

Cox keeps 12 beers in a variety of styles on tap and it introduces a new beer to the lineup every Wednesday. You can order a cup or a flight to enjoy at the bar or fill a growler (either bring your own or purchase one from Cox’s) to take home. It’s really reasonably priced, so you can try a few beers without breaking the bank. A 12-oz. cup is only $3 and a flight is only $5!

Cox deserves an extra shout out because the staff took time to teach me about their brewing process and beer in general, explaining the dry hopping process and differences between West Coast and New England IPAs. They really de-mystified the craft brewing process for me without being too technical or pretentious and I feel like a complete beer connoisseur after a simple 10-minute conversation. That’s what I love about these smaller craft breweries: you can really get to know the beer.

Plus, owners are veterans Nick Cox and Tim Kreider and they’re committed to supporting other veterans and veterans’ organizations. The only thing better than drinking beer is drinking beer for a good cause and Cox is the perfect place to do so.

You can grab Cox’s beer at the brewery or at Mount Joy Barber.

My favorite: BB-38 Battlewagon American Brown Ale (5% ABV, 27 IBU)

In my notes, I just have “WOW” to describe this beer. It’s dark and a bit heavier, but it doesn’t make you feel full after a few sips. It has this amazing smoky flavor that makes it unique but still easy to drink. It’s worth adding to a flight and trying, even if you’re not a fan of darker beers. I loved it and can’t wait to try it again.
